Ramaphosa: High-speed rail to connect Johannesburg and Durban

The South African Government is preparing to issue a request for proposals (RFP) for high-speed rail corridors in South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced during the 2026 State of the Nation Address in Cape Town.

The proposed routes include:

  • Johannesburg to Musina
  • eThekwini (Durban) to Johannesburg

“We are preparing to send out a request for proposals, which will introduce a new era of long-distance rail travel in South Africa,” the President said in his speech.

Private sector interest in high-speed rail project

Ramaphosa revealed that nearly 30 companies have indicated their willingness to participate in developing high-speed rail corridors following the government’s request for information last year.

The move signals the government’s intent to partner with the private sector in delivering large-scale rail infrastructure, although timelines and funding models have not yet been detailed.

If implemented, the corridors could significantly reduce travel times between key economic hubs and improve regional connectivity.
