Beowulf can be read as a Christian allegory about good and evil. The chronicler-poets, who were Christian monks, portrayed Beowulf as the champion of goodness (a mighty, muscular Christ figure) while Grendel, his mother, and the dragon were shown as the manifestations of evil.
