England vs Senegal preview
England return to action following Saturday’s sleep-inducing victory over Andorra.
The Three Lions secured maximum points to maintain their 100% start to World Cup qualification courtesy of Harry Kane’s solitary second-half goal.
But it was a hugely disappointing display against a team ranked 173rd in the world, with manager Thomas Tuchel later admitting his side “lacked the seriousness and the urgency” throughout.
Captain Kane added that matches with England in June can often be difficult with players jaded following a long club season.
A point perhaps proven by the fact England lost to Iceland 1-0 in June 2024, and were hammered 4-0 at home to Hungary in June 2022.
England will therefore need to raise their levels if they are to maintain their 100% record under Thomas Tuchel.
And new surroundings might just spark an improvement with Nottingham Forest’s City Ground playing host to Tuesday’s friendly – a venue they’ve not visited since 1909.
And they’ll need that spark when facing significantly better opposition in Senegal, who are unbeaten in their last 23 matches inside 90 minutes.
Pape Thiaw’s side are 19th in FIFA’s rankings, and arrive having secured a deserved 1-1 draw with Ireland courtesy of Ismaila Sarr’s late equaliser.
They have, however, won just one of their last seven matches against European nations (D3 L3), while England have never lost in 21 matches against African opposition (W15 D6), winning their only previous meeting with Senegal 3-0 in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

It was no surprise to see Harry Kane on the scoresheet again over the weekend.
The Bayern Munich forward, 31, netted the only goal of the game against Andorra – meaning he’s scored in all three of England’s games under Thomas Tuchel so far.
