A prisoner was shot and killed on Monday morning after a violent confrontation at the Ntuzuma Police Station in Durban.

The incident began at approximately 08:34 when the suspect allegedly overpowered a police officer and snatched their service weapon. This triggered a frantic call for urgent medical and tactical support from officials on-site.

The situation rapidly escalated into a hostage scenario, with several police officers trapped inside the building housing the holding cells.

For nearly an hour, a heavy exchange of gunfire ensued as the suspect held his ground.

In response, Reaction Unit South Africa and emergency services mobilised significant resources, including a Robinson R44 helicopter to provide aerial surveillance.

Upon the arrival of backup teams, it was established that the suspect had been neutralised during a shootout with the police.

While the gunman was pronounced dead at the scene, the trapped officers were successfully rescued. Although shaken, the officers sustained only minor injuries during the ordeal.
