The Xbox Game Showcase brought with it many new changes and additions, including the reveal of an unexpected Invincible game. Titled Invincible VS (versus), the trailer showcased what appeared to be a rather gory side-scroller fighting game, much akin to that of Mortal Kombat.
If anything, the game seems to be shaping up to be a much superior Mortal Kombat 11, and in some ways, represents what the latter should really have been from the get-go. More on the game and MK11 comparisons below.
Invincible VS releases in 2026
Invincible VS made its first debut today, June 8, 2025, during the Xbox Game Showcase of 2025. The reveal took place mid-segment and seems to have an original story penned by the team behind the Amazon Prime TV series.

In a gory 2 and a half minute long trailer, we just had our first look at both the gameplay and story setting for Invincible VS. VS is described as a 3v3 tag fighter, which can be best compared to the also superb Dragon Ball Fighter Z.
The game will also feature most of the comic and TV series’ cast, with notable examples being Invincible, his father Omni-Man, along with multiple side characters such as Atom Eve, Bulletproof, and Rex Splode. The voice actors for these characters seem to be making a return as well.
The game also features obscene amounts of delicious gore and brutal moves, which remind one of the classic Mortal Kombat games. Finishers and fatality-like sequences are commonplace, and the whole game has a rather unique look to it, and is set to release sometime in 2026.

The game features cel-shaded graphics, which, combined with the deliberately choppy character animations, make it look like it’s straight out of a comic book.
This makes Mortal Kombat 11’s current situation all the more miserable. The series managed to fumble hard and is now a fraction of what it used to be. MK11 was especially disastrous, and Invincible VS might just be what we need – that is, a real Mortal Kombat game that isn’t riddled with issues.
Mortal Kombat 11 managed to fumble their victory
While Mortal Kombat 11 managed to release to initially received a strong reception (and sales), it quickly died off and barely holds any relevance now. Particular complaints have been directed at its gameplay, which has been considered by a lot of long-time fans to be boring, soulless, and barely engaging.
Mortal Kombat 11 simply isn’t addictive enough, and has no way to hold onto its player base. While Netherrealm Studios really tried this time around, it failed to retain any players. In fact, MK11 barely receives any updates now and is in a sort of limbo.

Much of this can be attributed to the game’s age, but fans have previously voiced their disinterest in both the co-op and single-player elements of the game, which do appear to be quite ridiculous.
This is exactly where Invincible VS comes in. Fans have been begging for a proper Mortal Kombat alternative for years.
Coupled with its very engaging (and intriguing) lore, Invincible VS might just be what fans of gory tag team battlers have been looking for.
