A lot of us often describe ourselves through the career paths we have chosen or sometimes the careers that have chosen us. But who are we really when we are not at work? Who are you when you are not a doctor, a journalist, or a salesperson?

We live in a world where we proudly wear our career choices on our sleeves. Yet, how often do we give ourselves the chance to simply be human beings outside the office, the lab, the classroom, or the demands of our jobs?

GUIDED: Beyond the Paycheck is one of the most thought-provoking books by South African author Refilwe Marumo.

She says the inspiration for the book came when she realised she was experiencing burnout and needed to step back and rest.

I think there’s a lot of us who are living this perfect life on the outside. We are head of departments, we are doing so well however when we get home there seems to be something different, we are running so low on fuel, not energetic at all yet we have to wake up again the following morning and do it again,” said Marumo.

Marumo believes many people especially career-driven individuals in high positions are silently struggling.

“At some point in your life you will realise that you actually need to surrender and set yourself free. You need to emancipate your mind from all of this because no one else is going to save you.”

She adds that one of the most important qualities a person can develop is the ability to self-reflect.

“We are not one thing, we are layered. However in our upbringing we are never taught that you’re not one thing at that particular time.

You can be multifaceted. We are often taught to carry one title, and this limits us. You don’t get to explore what other title you can carry or what other talents you possesses.”

Marumo says it is important for people to understand that as human beings we have different layers. We are resilient and there are many characteristics about ourselves that we have yet to explore.

She adds that rest is essential and allowing yourself the time and space to simply be and to explore other parts of yourself can make a significant difference.

Remember, your career will always be part of your life. However, there is far more to you than the title you hold at the office.
