Marvel Rivals Catching Flak for New Wolverine Skin Giving Logan Pants

Have you ever wanted to play as your favorite Marvel superhero? If your answer to that question was yes, then you are in luck because Marvel Rivals presents you with that exact experience without making Spider-Man feel like a slow pendulum swinging around.

Marvel Rivals has been the talk of the town for a while now, from getting new heroes added every update, to people hating on Wolverine for wearing pants. You heard it right, folks, fans of the game are literally having a heated discussion right now, just because our favourite mutant is enjoying his summer outfit. Let’s delve deeper into this and find out why.

Marvel Rivals introduced the Weapon X skin with tactical pants

Marvel Rivals is currently one of the best third-person hero shooters out there. The game is made by NetEase Games, and it was released back in December of 2024. The title became such a huge phenomenon after its release that by February 2025, Rivals had reached more than 40 million players worldwide, even giving Overwatch 2 a run for its money.

Other than continuously disappointing fans by adding a new perma-flyer hero in the game, NetEase Games also excels in giving players the favourite skins of their beloved heroes. With the new Season update, the developers brought a new Wolverine skin, Weapon X, which almost gave a heart attack to a lot of fans, because lo and behold, he was wearing pants.

I’m genuinely confused about the disliking of this outfit.

One Reddit user @Impossible-Coach-273/Reddit asked why people are hating on the outfit, and another user, ultimateous_patatous replied, saying, “they want the peenar bub”, obviously referring to, uhh, Wolverine’s Wolvy poker. Another user replied to the post saying, “Need an emote where the meat pops out his zipper hole and goes Snikt”.

Even though it is true that the Marvel Rivals community has ulterior motives with the skin (ahem ahem!), according to comic book lore, Wolverine’s Weapon X version does not actually wear pants. It is because historically this version of Wolverine has suffered heavy experimentation, and comic book logic says, “strictly no pants for anyone who is being experimented on”.

NetEase Games could have opted for the “shorts” variant

While it may seem like fans of Marvel Rivals are just thirsting for Wolverine’s Weapon X skin, there is actually a deeper and canon reason behind their frustration. The Weapon X version of Wolverine has always been a more raw and primal version of our clawed character, completely stripped down, both figuratively and literally.

The absence of pants in those depictions wasn’t just for shock value, but it also served the purpose of making the audience realise the torture Wolverine went through. Having no pants highlighted his vulnerability and dehumanization.

That being said, NetEase could have easily held the middle ground and given Weapon X Wolverine shorts, which is the acceptable form in various other iterations of the character. That would have maintained the level of modesty they were going for, while still honoring the comic-accurate look. But instead, we got a summer-ready Logan, looking like he’s about to challenge you to a beach volleyball match and probably win.
