  • More than 25,000 VW Polo Vivo vehicles have been recalled due to a potential handbrake defect.
  • The issue relates to the rivet height on the handbrake lever, which may fall outside required specifications and pose a safety risk.
  • Owners have been advised to take extra parking precautions and have their vehicles inspected.

More than twenty-five thousand VW Polo Vivo vehicles have been recalled due to the rivet height on the handbrake lever fitted to the affected vehicles which may be outside the required specification.

The affected vehicles were made available for sale nationally between February 2025 and February 2026.

“If the rivet height is out of specification, the handbrake may not engage properly or could, in rare cases, disengage unexpectedly. This may pose a safety risk, particularly when the vehicle is parked on an incline,” said Volkswagen Group Africa in a statement.

Owners of the affected vehicles have been urged to take precautionary measures, such as ensuring that the vehicle is parked with additional precaution, including selecting first gear for manual vehicles or “P” for automatic models, as specified in the owner’s manual.

They have also been advised not to park the vehicle on any slope (uphill or downhill) until the inspection and any required repairs have been completed.

The National Consumer Commission is monitoring the recall closely to ensure full compliance with the Consumer Protection Act and to safeguard consumer rights.
