“For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
James Van Der Beek battled his cancer diagnosis with bravery
While Van der Beek initially kept his health struggle private to focus on treatment and his family, he went public with the news in November 2024.
Throughout his final years, he became a vocal advocate for early cancer screening, sharing his journey with a vulnerability that resonated with millions. He often spoke about how the illness shifted his perspective, teaching him to find worthiness simply in “existing” rather than just through his professional roles.
The actor’s passing has prompted a massive outpouring of tributes from fans and former co-stars.
Even as his health declined, Van Der Beek remained dedicated to his craft and his family; he recently worked on the Legally Blonde prequel series Elle and participated in a moving Dawson’s Creek charity reunion via video message in late 2025.
He is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children
