- The family of late DJ Sumbody (Oupa Sefoka) has rejected reports linking his 2022 murder to alleged drug-related contract killings, calling the claims “false, reckless, and baseless.”
- The claims stem from a Sunday Times report referencing a leaked affidavit allegedly linked to DJ Vettys, who has also distanced himself from the contents of the report.
- SAPS has warned against publishing leaked affidavits, while the DJ Sumbody murder case remains ongoing with several accused facing trial in October 2026 in the Johannesburg High Court.
The family of the late South African DJ and musician Oupa “DJ Sumbody” Sefoka has disputed reports that his 2022 murder was linked to contract killings involving his alleged involvement in a drug-related criminal network.
This follows a report published by the Sunday Times on Sunday, 19 April 2026, which contained incriminating information allegedly sourced from a leaked affidavit by DJ Vettys (Seunkie Mokubung), who survived a shooting in January 2024.
In a statement on Tuesday, 21 April, the Sefoka family labelled the allegations as “false, reckless, and baseless”.
“As a family, we will not be drawn into responding to unfounded allegations, speculation, or trial by media. What has been published and said publicly has caused us to relive the pain and trauma of the events of 20 November 2022, a day that changed our lives forever,” the statement read.
The family also called on the media to refrain from spreading misinformation and confirmed that they are considering legal action against those involved.
“Our legal team has been informed of this incident, and we are currently in consultation regarding the published article, as well as statements made by individuals across social media platforms in relation to this case. Legal action will be taken against any institution or individual involved,” they added.

Mokubung also released a statement on Monday, 20 April, distancing himself from the contents of the article and the leaked affidavit.
“I have become aware of recent media reports in which my name has been mentioned in connection with an ongoing matter. It is important to clarify that I am not an accused person in any investigation. I am a victim of a serious incident in which my life was placed at risk, and any engagement with authorities has been solely in the interest of my own safety and recovery,” he said.
Meanwhile, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has urged journalists and media houses not to publish leaked affidavits, warning that doing so places the lives of witnesses and their families at serious risk.
“The South African Police Service (SAPS) has noted such publication on the front page of The Sunday Times newspaper, where certain DJs’ information and pictures were published,” said national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
“While SAPS recognises and respects the vital role played by the media in promoting accountability and uncovering the truth, we urge all media houses, especially the Sunday Times, journalists and social media content creators to exercise responsibility and restraint when handling such sensitive information,” she said.
Sefoka was killed in a drive-by shooting in Woodmead, Johannesburg, on 20 November 2022. Two of his bodyguards also died in the attack.
As of 2026, Katiso “KT” Molefe is alleged to be the mastermind, alongside co-accused Michael Pule Tau, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, and Musa Kekana.
They face 35 charges, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, among others.
The case is set down for trial at the Johannesburg High Court on Monday, 26 October 2026.
