A 58-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the deadly road rage shooting in Emmarentia, Johannesburg, has been released from custody pending investigations.

The devastating incident occurred on Sunday, 19 April 2026, following an altercation between two drivers over a minor collision.

The dispute escalated into a gunfight, leaving one person dead and his wife injured.

The accused, who was due to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, did not appear after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) decided not to proceed with prosecution at this stage.

He was initially facing two charges, including murder and attempted murder.

“The latter will be placed at some later stage when we have sufficient evidence to place it on the roll,” said NPA spokesperson Abram Magaboke.

Details surrounding the road rage incident:

According to the accused’s statement, he alleges the road rage incident was initiated by the deceased.

He claims the situation escalated into a collision and a physical altercation after the man and his wife verbally abused and physically assaulted him.

He further alleges that the situation intensified when the wife took out a firearm, discharged it, and then handed it to the deceased, who also fired in his direction.

He then retaliated using his own firearm.

At this stage, Gauteng police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.
