  • Soweto residents have been urged to stop protesting to allow electricity restoration to proceed.
  • City Power says infrastructure repairs are complete, with final steps underway before power is fully restored.
  • Residents must meet certain requirements, including purchasing electricity, before supply can resume.

Soweto residents have been urged to halt protests to allow for the restoration of electricity in affected areas.

This comes as Pimville residents took to the streets on Monday morning, 20 April 2026, protesting after being without electricity for several days.

“Two transformers supplying the area were out of service for an extended period due to the unavailability of replacement units. These transformers have since been successfully installed and the medium voltage (MV) network has been energised.

The final step before full restoration is the energising of the low voltage (LV) network, which supplies electricity directly to households,” said City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena.

Mangena said it is important for residents to understand that several steps must be thoroughly followed before electricity can be fully restored to households.

One of these steps is normalisation, which is necessary to protect infrastructure, improve reliability, and ensure fair access to electricity services.

“As part of this process, customers were requested to purchase electricity prior to energisation. This once-off initial purchase is set at R500 for general customers and R200 for qualifying indigent households registered under the Expanded Social Package (ESP). This confirms active participation in the system and supports sustainable service delivery,” he said.

Electricity supply to households will only be restored once all normalisation requirements have been met, including the required level of electricity purchases.

Residents are encouraged to comply with the normalisation process to enable restoration.
