South Africans can now get their hands on one of the world’s most eye-catching citrus fruits, with the award-winning ONIX blood orange arriving locally for the first time.
The Spanish-grown variety is known for its dramatic appearance: a dark, almost black outer skin that opens to reveal a deep ruby-red interior.
It also features natural striping and a flavour said to balance sweetness with bright acidity.
A limited quantity of ONIX is now available at selected Checkers stores in Gauteng and the Western Cape.
Why this citrus stands out
ONIX has already earned major international recognition. It won the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award 2025 and also received the Superior Taste Award from the International Taste Institute.
Producers say the fruit combines standout looks with strong flavour.
“ONIX reflects how varietal innovation can elevate the citrus category by bringing together distinctive flavour, visual appeal, and strong consumer relevance,” said André Russouw, country manager at Genesis Fresh South Africa.
The fruit is also naturally high in anthocyanins, the plant compounds that give blood oranges their rich colouring.
That makes it visually striking, while adding to its appeal for health-conscious shoppers.
Where to buy ONIX in South Africa
For now, the fruit is being sold through a pilot launch at selected Checkers supermarkets in Gauteng and the Western Cape.
It will be sold loose rather than in bags, allowing shoppers to buy one or two to try.
Its flavour profile means it can be eaten fresh, juiced, or used in desserts and cooking.
“ONIX brings new energy into the citrus category through distinctive flavour, strong visual appeal, and clear consumer relevance,” Russouw added.
With South Africans already familiar with premium citrus, the unusual colour contrast and limited availability could make ONIX one of this season’s most talked-about fruits.
Whether sliced open for breakfast, added to salads or used in cocktails, ONIX is likely to turn heads long before the first bite.
