Former Junior Khanye has questioned the decision to award Lebohang Maboe the Man of the Match accolade following Kaizer Chiefs’ goalless draw against Polokwane City on Saturday.
Amakhosi were held by Rise and Shine at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in a match that produced few clear-cut chances despite periods of dominance from the hosts.
Maboe, who has been one of Chiefs’ more consistent performers in the second half of the season, picked up his fifth Man of the Match award, a decision that did not sit well with Khanye.
Speaking on Soccerbeat, Khanye criticised the call, suggesting that Thabang Matuludi was more deserving of the recognition.
“I’m surprised Maboe is Man of the Match today… Skelem (biased decision). I would have given it to Matuludi. So are we trying to push this guy to the World Cup?” Khanye said.
Polokwane City head coach Phuti Mohafe echoed similar sentiments, arguing that his side had the better of the chances and controlled large spells of the game.
“We had the better opportunities to score. We created a lot of chances but continued to miss them, especially in the second half. In the last 25 minutes, we were all over Chiefs,” said Mohafe as per FARPost.
Maboe’s Man of the Match questioned
“I am so confused about how Maboe got the Man of the Match. I don’t know how he got it because he was nowhere to be seen on the field. Whenever he got the ball, we were there. We got most of the balls from him. So how can he be Man of the Match if he was losing possession? I think we played better.”
Despite the controversy, the stalemate leaves both sides with a point, though Polokwane City may feel aggrieved not to have claimed all three after their late dominance.
