Kaizer Chiefs coach reveals why he dropped experienced defender

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef has explained why he dropped Given Msimango from his starting line-up.

The former TS Galaxy captain did not start against Mages FC on Wednesday at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Ben Youssef said the decision to replace Msimango in defence was to manage the workload of his players.

“As I said, we don’t depend on one player. It’s a big squad, and we have to rotate,” he told the media after the game.

“Sometimes it’s about prevention, and sometimes it’s the workload. So the decision was made last week, and we knew that [Inacio] Miguel would play this game.

That’s the plan that we prepared, and we are proud because every player who came to pitch helped. Miguel also performed very well today [Wednesday]. Last week it was Given [Msimango]. So sometimes we need to make rotations,” Ben Youssef concluded.

After being on the sidelines for two season, Msimango was recalled back into the Kaizer Chiefs starting lineup in the second half of the season, featuring six times.

On Wednesday, however, Inacio Miguel was partnered with Aden McCarthy at the heart of the Chiefs‘ defence. The duo have been the preferred centre-back pairing for the Soweto giants this season.

With just seven matches remaining for Kaizer Chiefs, it remains to be seen if Msimango will feature again in the heart of defence. His contract is set to expire at the end of the season.
