- The Judicial Service Commission has recommended Aubrey Ledwaba for Gauteng Judge President despite bribery allegations.
- He has denied claims that he accepted money in a bail case linked to an alleged hitman.
- The final decision now rests with President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has recommended Deputy Judge President Aubrey Ledwaba for appointment as Judge President of the Gauteng High Court Division, despite serious allegations hanging over him.
Ledwaba was the only candidate shortlisted for the position and has been acting in the role since Dunstan Mlambo was elevated to a higher office in 2025.
His interview on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, was overshadowed by allegations that surfaced at the Madlanga Commission, linking him to a bribery claim involving the bail application of alleged contract killer Katiso “KT” Molefe.
It is alleged that millions were exchanged to influence the outcome of Molefe’s case.
However, Ledwaba strongly denied the claims, telling the commission he had never received any money and that the allegations are unfounded and lack credible evidence.
Despite the controversy, the commission resolved to recommend him for the top judicial post in Gauteng.
Before deliberations, Chief Justice Mandisa Maya acknowledged that it was unfortunate that Ledwaba’s candidacy had been clouded by the allegations.
The recommendation will now be sent to President Cyril Ramaphosa for final consideration.
Meanwhile, Mbekezeli Benjamin from Judges Matter told Phemelo Motene from Kaya 959’s Point of View that allegations raised at the commission are concerning, but noted that Ledwaba has long requested an opportunity to clear his name.
Benjamin said it was fair for Ledwaba to respond during the interview, especially as he claims he has not yet been formally given a platform to defend himself against these shocking allegations.
