  • Property Point founder Shawn Theunissen identifies property as a primary vehicle for youth employment and economic growth.
  • The focus remains on transforming areas like Soweto into self-sustaining property hubs through local ownership.
  • High-growth roles in valuations and leasing are highlighted alongside critical shortages in the tech and trade sectors.

Kaya Biz recently had a discusion with Property Point founder Shawn Theunissen, who highlighted the diverse career paths available within South Africa’s property sector.

From commercial leasing and property valuations to large-scale development, the industry offers significant entry points for young professionals looking to build sustainable careers.

A central theme of Theunissen’s strategy is the creation of property ecosystems within townships.

“Property Point is an industry based incubator. We’ve been around since 2008, focusing on developing entrepreneurial skills and supporting small businesses within the property value chain. And we recently started a real estate incubator with the focus of saying, how are we able to focus on getting young people into the real estate market.” said Theunissen,

By empowering residents in areas such as Soweto to move into development and ownership, these communities can foster internal economic growth rather than relying on external investment.

“Our aim is really to focus on providing over 700 real estate opportunities for use or for young people. where we will train them up in terms of how to become a real estate agent. We’ve partnered with industry, for instance, with some of the brands we currently have over 30 of. It’s partnered up with us that’s creating those market opportunities and work experiences.” said Theunissen,

Beyond property, the South African job market shows a high demand for specialised skills to bridge the current unemployment gap. Information technology remains a priority, with a need for software developers and data analysts.
