- Julius Mkhwanazi has been accused of misleading the Madlanga Commission about his mother’s death to avoid testifying.
- leader Mahlape Sello said investigations show the deceased was not his biological mother.
- Mkhwanazi insists she was his stepmother and disputes official Home Affairs records.
Tensions flared at the Madlanga Commission as evidence leader Advocate Mahlape Sello accused Julius Mkhwanazi of misleading the inquiry about his mother’s death in an alleged attempt to avoid testifying.
Sello told the commission that investigations revealed the woman who died last month was not Mkhwanazi’s biological mother.
The commission heard that, according to Department of Home Affairs records, the woman Mkhwanazi identified as his mother would be only ten years older than him.
Official records instead list Pertunia Mkhwanazi as his mother.
Sello said at no point did the suspended EMPD deputy chief clarify the discrepancy.
“During consultations, Mr Mkhwanazi convinced us that the person who had passed away was his mother his birth mother, not a cousin, stepmother or relative. When I conducted my own investigations, I uncovered that she was a close family member,” Sello told the commission on Tuesday, 14 April 2026.
Mkhwanazi, however, told the commission that the deceased was his stepmother, who had raised him since he was eight years old.
He further claimed that Pertunia Mkhwanazi is his paternal grandmother and suggested that Home Affairs records may be incorrect.
“I am seeing this birth certificate for the first time in my life. I am requesting this commission to go to court with my ID and check how my grandmother, who is the mother of my father, raised us,” he said.
Mkhwanazi is one of the senior police officials who are set to be investigated for corruption and wrongdoing following recommendations by the Madlanga Commission’s interim report.
