We’ve all been there: Giving advice no one takes

The Siz The World team weighed in on Meta’s recent announcement that it will be shutting down its Metaverse project after reportedly investing $80 billion into it.

It sparked an interesting question in studio: have you ever warned someone against something, only for them to ignore you and regret it later?

Or even worse, ignore you and succeed anyway?

Sizwe Dhlomo shared a story about a friend who owned an online store and wanted to open a physical retail space. Based on his own experience, he advised against it.

“I told them, bra, don’t do that. It’s risky,” he said.

But things didn’t quite play out the way he expected.

“They opened the stores and were making millions a month in turnover. I had to go back and admit I was wrong.”

It is a reminder that sometimes advice says more about our own experiences than it does about the actual opportunity.

Mpho Maboi pointed out that this shows up clearly in relationships. Giving advice in matters of the heart or money is rarely straightforward, and people do not always listen.

Sizwe agreed, adding that we often advise from our own limitations and past experiences.

And that can cloud our judgement.
