National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has officially confirmed that Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will remain at the helm of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal.
The decision to renew his contract comes just weeks before his current five-year tenure was set to expire on 30 March 2026.
The extension follows high-level consultations between General Masemola and KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli.
Premier Ntuli formally supported the move, citing Mkhwanazi’s disciplined leadership and his “no-nonsense” approach to tackling the province’s complex crime landscape as pivotal factors in the decision.
