  • ANC members allegedly threatened Witness F to prevent him from completing his testimony at the Madlanga Commission.
  • The arrest of a suspect linked to the murder of Witness D, Marius van der Merwe, highlights ongoing dangers for witnesses.
  • Nkosi’s identity was revealed during proceedings, ending the in-camera protection for his testimony.

Chairperson Mbuyiseli Madlanga revealed that Sergeant Fannie Nkosi, known as Witness F, has alleged receiving several threats from ANC members aimed at stopping him from completing his testimony.

Madlanga read the statement into the record as Nkosi appeared physically before the commission on Monday,16 March 2026.

Nkosi first testified in camera last month due to safety concerns but proceedings were postponed when he fell ill.

During the break, suspended deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya revealed Nkosi’s identity, making it impossible to keep his testimony in camera.

“While the Commission takes the safety of its witnesses seriously and will take all reasonable measures to ensure that its witnesses are not put at risk, it is clear to me that the order for him to continue testifying remotely is no longer justified. There is no basis for believing that any of the evidence he intends to present will place his life in danger,” said Madlanga.

The chairperson has also called on police to act against individuals accused of corruption who are avoiding accountability.

This follows the arrest of a man suspected of being the shooter behind the brutal murder of the commission’s witness D, Marius van der Merwe.

Van der Merwe (41) was gunned down outside his home in Brakpan last year after his chilling testimony against members of EMPD, SAPS, and private security officials.

The suspect is making his first appearance at the fully packed Brakpan Magistrate’s Court in Ekurhuleni today, 16 March 2026.

Established by President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2025, the commission is probing allegations of criminal and political interference in the criminal justice system, following explosive allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who accused politicians and senior police officials of colluding with criminal networks.
