Alexander Forbes reports a surge in two-pot retirement withdrawals
The Siz The World team recently weighed in on reports that the website of Alexander Forbes experienced technical issues after more than 100,000 withdrawals under South Africa’s two-pot retirement system since the beginning of March.
The news comes at a time when many households are feeling the pressure of rising costs. With consumption ticking up and everyday expenses climbing, more people are turning to their retirement savings to make ends meet.
During the discussion, Sizwe Dhlomo raised an interesting point.
“How many other retirement annuities are there?” he asked, noting that the figures being discussed were only from Alexander Forbes.
He then added something that gave the conversation a deeper angle.
“The idea of having a retirement annuity assumes that you’ll reach at least 60.”
It is a sobering thought. Retirement products are built around long-term planning. But for many people, the reality of daily life can make the distant future feel uncertain.
Mpho Maboi echoed that sentiment.
“A lot of people are looking at their current situation and thinking, as things stand, I might not even get to that future,” she said. “People are worried about surviving day to day.”
That tension between planning for tomorrow and surviving today is something many South Africans can relate to.
Saving for retirement is often framed as a simple discipline. Put money away now and enjoy the benefits later. But when life becomes expensive and unpredictable, that calculation becomes much more complicated.
The conversation eventually turned to the Kaya audience with a simple question.
