South African media company MultiChoice has announced that its popular video-on-demand streaming service Showmax will be discontinued.
According to the MultiChoice team, the Showmax board made the decision to strengthen its digital offering and ensure long-term sustainability.
In an email sent to customers, MultiChoice stressed that streaming will continue as usual, with no interruptions for now.
“Showmax subscribers are a priority for us, and we are working on plans to ensure clear communication and a smooth transition when the time comes.
“We will share further details well in advance, including timelines and any future steps, should they be required,” the statement read.
MultiChoice first launched Showmax in South Africa in August 2015, targeting Africa as a major subscription video-on-demand market.
However, by the time French broadcaster Canal+ took over MultiChoice in 2025, the platform had already been flagged for its poor financial performance.
In addition, earlier this year Showmax and DStv lost access to a large portion of HBO and Warner Bros. content after licensing agreements between Canal+ and Warner Bros. expired.
