If you were born in March and love animals, then you’re one of the lucky people who can access the Johannesburg Zoo for free this month.

This as the zoo celebrates its 122nd birthday. The zoo has invited all March babies to come and enjoy being around South African animals at no cost, with the exception of 21 March 2026.

“The Joburg Zoo’s humble beginnings in 1904 saw a mere 200-acre stretch of land and an animal collection of no more than 10 species. To date, the zoo boasts over 274 species and approximately 2 127 individual animals, including some of the world’s rarest and most vulnerable species,” said the zoo in a statement.

Johannesburg Zoo is one of the South African establishments that plays a vital role in local and international conservation programmes, protecting endangered and iconic African species.

It is also one of the largest green spaces in central Johannesburg.

“Join us during March as we celebrate our birthday and remember to bring your proof of identification for free access. If you’re a morning person, strap on your running shoes at our birthday Zoo Trot on Sunday, 8 March 2026.”
