  • Sibusiso Patrick Shongwe, 23, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal 2023 murder of his three-week-old son.
  • After unsuccessfully demanding an abortion, Shongwe orchestrated a kidnapping to snatch the infant from his mother before killing him.
  • The Mpumalanga High Court dismissed his appeal, citing a total lack of remorse for the fatal “sharp-force” neck injuries inflicted on the child.

Sibusiso Patrick Shongwe, 23, has received a life sentence for the murder of his three-week-old son in Driekoppies, Mpumalanga. The High Court heard that Shongwe had initially disputed paternity and pressured the mother, Noluthando Mlambo, to terminate her pregnancy.

In March 2023, Shongwe lured the mother and child to a meeting under the guise of providing supplies. After isolating Mlambo, he used three accomplices to accost her, allowing him to snatch the infant and flee.

The baby’s body was discovered two days later in nearby bushes; a post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as sharp-force neck trauma.

Despite Shongwe’s denials, State Advocate Senzo Zindela secured a conviction through witness testimony and a confession. The presiding judge noted Shongwe’s complete lack of remorse and South Africa’s escalating violent crime rates as factors in the sentencing.

Finding no mitigating circumstances to justify a lesser term, the court imposed a life sentence and declared Shongwe unfit to possess a firearm. His application for leave to appeal was summarily dismissed.
