How one woman is opening the Aviation industry in SA to the next generation

The Best T in the City with Tbose recently spoke to Dr Thandi Ngcobo, founder of Fuze Aviation Academy in Pietermaritzburg.

From inspiring the next generation of pilots and engineers to rethinking how young people access opportunities in the aviation sector, Dr Ngcobo’s journey is rooted in intention and impact.

Speaking about her decision to enter aviation, she shared that from a young age, she knew she did not want to settle.

“I had to look for a critical skill that is in demand and make an impact on black communities,” she explained.

Aviation felt like the right path. A space where skill, discipline, and opportunity could intersect in a meaningful way.

Her journey, however, was shaped not only by ambition, but also by kindness. When her family fell on difficult times during her childhood, another family opened their home to her and her mother.

“They did not have to take me in, but they did,” she said. “They had their own children, yet they exposed me to so much love. They helped shape the woman I am today. Both of them are still alive. They still love me, and I still love them.”

When reflecting on her success, Dr Ngcobo is clear that fulfilment goes beyond financial gain.

“It is less about money and more about being in a space where you are comfortable being yourself,” she noted.

Today, she employs 80 people and continues to invest in the future of young South Africans. As part of that commitment, Fuze Academy is offering a bursary to a Grade 8 learner who will attend FUZE Aviation High School, opening the door to a career many young people never imagined possible.

For Dr Ngcobo, aviation is not just an industry. It is a tool for access, dignity, and long-term transformation.
