CIT suspects killed in shootout with police in Pietermaritzburg

Two suspects linked to a cash-in-transit heist were fatally shot in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Netshiunda said the suspects, who were linked to a robbery in Verulam, died during a shootout with police at Nhlazatshe in Edendale in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Netshiunda said the suspects were part of a group of at least 12 people who robbed a cash-in-transit vehicle.

FIREARMS SEIZED FROM THE SCENE

“The suspects brought the cash delivery truck to a standstill and allegedly robbed security guards of their three firearms before fleeing from the scene with an undisclosed amount of money,” Netshiunda said in a statement on Tuesday.

Police responded to intelligence about a suspected hideout in Edendale.

“Two suspects were shot and fatally wounded during the shootout and one suspect narrowly evaded arrest. Police found three firearms, two rifles and a handgun, together with several rounds of ammunition in the possession of the suspects,” he said.

Police also recovered a VW Polo used during the crime. A bakkie with several number plates was found in the garage.

Netshiunda said no police officers were injured during the shootout.

A search for more suspects is ongoing.
