  • Protests over electricity disconnections have left parts of Tembisa inaccessible.
  • Police used stun grenades and tear gas to disperse residents blocking roads.
  • Protesters are demanding direct intervention from Premier Panyaza Lesufi.

Police have fired stun grenades and tear gas at residents in Tembisa as protests over electricity disconnections and changes to the indigent subsidy policy continue.

Community members returned to the streets on Monday afternoon following a clash during a meeting with the City of Ekurhuleni MMC for Finance, Jongizizwe Dlabathi, who they say failed to adequately address their demands.

Residents have shut down the area, blocking roads with stones and burning tyres in protest against electricity pre-termination notices and disconnections linked to the municipality’s revised policy.

Protesters are calling for direct engagement with Panyaza Lesufi, accusing the mayor, Nkosindiphile Xhakaza of failing to resolve their concerns.

The unrest began on Sunday night when residents barricaded several streets in response to electricity cut-offs.

The situation remains tense, with major routes in and out of the township inaccessible.

Residents in Tembisa and across Gauteng are now awaiting Lesufi’s State of the Province Address expected at 17:00 on Monday.
