The firearm allegedly used in the attempted murder case involving the son of late former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has still not been recovered.
This was confirmed by Gauteng police on Monday morning ahead of Bellarmine “Chatunga” Mugabe’s court appearance at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court.
Mugabe’s son and another suspect are back in the dock following their arrest last week after a 23-year-old alleged gardener was shot at Mugabe’s residence in Hyde Park, north of Johannesburg.
The victim sustained two gunshot wounds and is said to be in a critical condition in hospital.
The duo is facing charges of attempted murder and has been in custody at the Bramley police station following their arrest.
Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulu confirmed that the firearm allegedly used in the attack has not yet been recovered, raising concerns that the crime scene could have been tampered with.
“The firearm that was used in the commission of the crime has not been found. As we already indicated last week, the two suspects, aged 28 and 33, have been arrested for attempted murder and will be appearing today for attempted murder and defeating the ends of justice, since the firearm has not been found.”
Police expressed confidence that the pair will be denied bail, adding that the case remains strong despite the missing firearm.
