- SANTACO says taxi operations in Tembisa will continue as normal despite the planned protest.
Residents in Tembisa will on Monday voice their grievances and frustrations in a protest over the City of Ekurhuleni’s electricity disconnections, termination notices, and matters relating to the City’s indigent policy.
Nkosindiphile Xhakaza acknowledged the seriousness of the issues brought forward and affirmed the City’s commitment to engaging constructively with residents.
“With immediate effect, the Executive Mayor has instructed the relevant departments to halt the issuing of pre-termination and termination letters and the disconnection of indigent and deemed indigent households pending a comprehensive investigation into the concerns raised,” said the City’s spokesperson, Ramatolo Tlotleng.
“We will progressively begin with the restoration of electricity to households that have been disconnected, particularly those registered as indigent and deemed indigent according to the City’s criteria.”
Meanwhile, the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) Ekurhuleni Region has clarified that taxi operations in Tembisa will not be postponed on Monday, despite reports of a planned community shutdown.
“Taxi services will operate as normal, with caution, and will be guided by conditions on the ground. Commuters who require transport and can move safely will be transported.”
It remains to be seen whether residents will still take to the streets following the mayor’s latest announcement.
