Toll fees going up in March – Here’s what SA motorists will pay

Motorists across South Africa will soon be paying more at toll gates after the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) confirmed its annual tariff adjustments for 2026.

The increases, published in the Government Gazette on 5 February 2026, will see toll fees rise by 3.12% across the board, effective from midnight on 1 March 2026.

The adjustment is linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) as determined by Statistics South Africa and is notably lower than last year’s 4.85% increase.

Why toll fees are increasing

SANRAL said the annual adjustment is necessary to ensure that toll revenue continues to fund the maintenance, operation and upgrading of South Africa’s national toll road network.

Commenting on the increases, SANRAL General Manager for Communications and Marketing, Vusi Mona, said toll income is also used to service debt incurred to implement major road projects.

“The funds go a long way towards ensuring that SANRAL fulfils its mandate of delivering quality road infrastructure that adds value to the lives of South African citizens,” Mona said.

He added that national road infrastructure is critical for enabling basic services such as water, sanitation, electricity, telecommunications and public transport, as well as supporting industrial, commercial and household activity.

While acknowledging the pressure on consumers amid a strained economic environment, Mona said the agency must balance affordability with the need to maintain safe and reliable roads.

What vehicle class applies to you?

Toll tariffs are structured according to four vehicle classes:

  • Class 1: Light vehicles (cars, motorcycles, motor tricycles and vehicles other than heavy vehicles, with or without a trailer)
  • Class 2: Medium heavy vehicles
  • Class 3: Large heavy vehicles
  • Class 4: Extra-large heavy vehicles

For most road users, Class 1 tariffs will be the most relevant.
