  • SASSA beneficiaries have been urged to respond to review SMS notifications immediately to prevent their social grants from lapsing or being cancelled.
  • Mandated by the Social Assistance Act, these reviews verify eligibility and life certification to prevent fraud and the misuse of public funds.
  • Recipients are urged to update their contact details and can seek guidance via SASSA’s toll-free helpline or at local service centres.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has warned beneficiaries to act immediately upon receiving SMS notifications for grant reviews.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the agency stressed that ignoring these requests could lead to the lapsing or non-payment of vital social assistance.

These reviews are a legal requirement under the Social Assistance Act, designed to ensure that public funds reach only eligible and deserving recipients.

By verifying “life certification” and current financial status, SASSA aims to eliminate duplicate claims and fraudulent activity. Beneficiaries are urged to visit their nearest SASSA office promptly once notified to confirm their continued eligibility.

To streamline the process, SASSA is encouraging all recipients to ensure their contact details are up to date on the system.

While reviews currently take place at physical service centres, the agency is exploring online options to reduce office congestion and travel costs for the public. For further assistance, a toll-free helpline (0800 60 10 11) is available during weekday working hours.
